On 4th February, 1915, the 2nd Leicestershire battalion of the 20th (Garhwal) Brigade, 7th (Meerut) Division of the Indian Army, left their billets in La Couture and moved into the front line near Rue des Berceaux where they remained until relieved on 11th February. John Acaster died from wounds on 11th February and is buried in a  nearby cemetery. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
